ACTION LINE: How to acquire excess military equipment property

Q: I am the emergency preparedness coordinator for my church and wondered if Hill AFB could help with a donation/sponsorship request. I’m looking for organizations that can help us obtain some equipment like bags and backpacks of all sizes, military trucks, backhoes, forklifts, radios, computers, cameras, and rescue and safety equipment such as AEDs, first aid kits, trauma kits and personal protection equipment. I have a more extensive list I can provide if you’re able to assist.

A:  Federal laws and regulations prohibit Hill AFB and other military organizations from donating excess military equipment and property to private individuals and organizations. Rather, military equipment and property that is no longer needed is transferred to the Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services for further handling and disposition.

DLA Disposition Services in conjunction with U.S. General Services Administration has a process whereby certain property can be donated to private organizations. That process requires organizations to work with State Agencies for Surplus Property (SASP).

To learn if you or your organization is eligible to receive donated property, please contact the Utah SASP at 801-619-7219 or at danmartinez@utah.gov.
