3rd Annual AFSA golf tournament on May 8

The Air Force Sergeants Association Chapter 1163 will host its 3rd Annual Golf Tournament on May 8.

Entry fee is $65 per person. The tournament is a four-person scramble tournament and a shotgun start begins at 8 a.m. The event includes greens fee, cart, goodie bag, unlimited range balls prior to tee time, complimentary beverages, lunch and prizes.

Hill observes Police Week May 12-16

The 75th Security Forces Squadron and its Defenders Association will host a number of events May 12-16 in honor of National Police Week.

A golf tournament will be held at 8 a.m. May 12. Cost is $60 per person. The fee includes light breakfast, fees/cart, lunch and prizes. Proceeds will be donated to Utah 1033 Foundation. For details, contact David McClain at 801-775-5574 Jeffrey Berg at 777-8827. 

A shooting competition will be held at 7:30 a.m. May 14 at the Hill AFB shooting range. Cost is $20 per person, and four-man teams will compete for top honors. For details, email christopher.muncy.1@us.af.mil or jared.noland@us.af.mil. 

A retreat ceremony to honor fallen peace officers will be at 4 p.m. May 15 at Building 1102.

Boots to Business two-day classes set

A Boots to Business two-day class will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 12-13 at the Salt Lake County Complex in Salt Lake City.

The class is offered to military veterans and current service members and offers training and resources related to starting and operating a small business.

Armed Forces Day concert May 16

A concert to honor military members from all services will be from 4:30 – 9:30 p.m. May 16 at the Gallivan Center, 239 S. Main in Salt Lake City. Admission and parking are free. 

Entertainment begins with a performance by Mark Owens and Southbound, followed by the 23rd Army Band Rock Band performing.  The main performance starts 7:30 p.m. when the Utah National Guard 23rd Army Band, Denny Saunders, commander, takes the stage with the Choral Arts Society of Utah. There will also be a special appearance from The Anthem Choir from Hill AFB.

Benefit concert to honor Vietnam vets

NAM JAM, a benefit concert to honor Vietnam-era veterans will be held from noon to midnight May 16 at the American Legion Post 129 in Huntsville.

This concert is supported by the Hill AFB Vietnam Commemoration Committee in conjunction with the Department of Defense’s commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. 

Featured musicians will be Scotty Haze, Roby Kap, Hearts of Steel, Shades of Grey, Bill ‘n Diane, Vintage Steel, and local singer/songwriters. Come out and enjoy the music, vendors, and car and bike show. 

Dry camping is available on a first-come, first-served basis. NAM JAM is a festival-style event so bring your own blankets and chairs for the day. 

All proceeds will be used to purchase a permanent replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall to be placed in Layton.

Team Hill Combat Dining-In May 30

The Team Hill 5/6 group is sponsoring a Team Hill Combat Dining-In May 30 at Hill AFB’s Centennial Park near the South Gate. 

Social hour begins at 5 p.m. and the event begins at 6 p.m. Cost is $10 per ticket. The event is only open to military members.

Have you wondered where you could go to get photos after you and/or your family attended a special event on Hill AFB? 

The base’s Public Affairs Studio has a “Team Hill Public Affairs (75 ABW/PA)” SharePoint  site set up where people can download photos following an event at https://cs.eis.afmc.af.mil/sites/Hill/Event%20Images/Forms/AllItems.aspx. 

The site can only be accessed from a government computer; however, the studio’s photographers and graphics artists are available to assist you should you be unable to access the site or otherwise need assistance.

Hill Half Marathon seeks volunteers

The Hill AFB Fitness Center is seeking volunteers for the Hill AFB Half Marathon on May 30.

Volunteers will support registration, event setup, aid stations, water stations and more.

AF provides free CNA training

The Airman & Family Readiness Center is helping active-duty Air Force spouses complete the Certified Nursing Assistant program for free through the Davis Applied Technology College in Kaysville. That includes tuition, fees, textbooks and nursing curriculum.

If students can dedicate 12 hours a week to the course, they can be completed/certified within two months. They can be certified faster if they choose the base on the various schedules they accept or if they can attend more than 12 hours per week.

The certification is valid anywhere in the United States. The DATC also can assist with local job placement.

Availability for this grant is limited to the first 10 applicants. Other qualified candidates may be able to utilize the CNA training offered by the ACE program.

Class start dates vary throughout the year, so interested spouses can call for start dates, times and availability. Contact Scott Jones or Sam Child at 801-777-4681. 

AF officials seek award nominees

Air Force officials are accepting nominations for the 2015 Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs Grateful Nation Award. The award is presented annually to six service members who distinguish themselves through superior conduct in the war on terrorism.

Air Force enlisted nominees must be senior master sergeants or below, and officer nominees must be captains or below. Organizations and base-level personnel must contact their major command, field operating agency or direct reporting unit for applicable suspense dates and nomination procedures. Each MAJCOM, COCOM, FOA and DRU may nominate one person. 

Nomination packages are due to the Air Force Personnel Center by May 28.

South Gate lane closed till mid-June

Construction at South Gate Drive and Balmer Road to add an additional lane of traffic to the outbound side of the South Gate is occurring now through June 15. The construction will result in intermittent closures to one lane of traffic at the South Gate and South Gate Drive between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. For more information, call Sheila Hayes at 801-777-2966.

Reunion weekend for AF Reserve in Oct.

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — The 419th Fighter Wing will honor the Air Force Reserve’s remarkable 60-year legacy at Hill AFB during a reunion weekend here Oct. 2-4.

“The Air Force Reserve has been at Hill Air Force Base since 1955,” said Col. Bryan Radliff, 419th FW commander. “We’ve had different names, flown different aircraft, but one thing that hasn’t changed is Utahns serving their nation.”

The weekend events include a formal gala, golf tournaments, a motorcycle rally, fun runs, and family activities.

The reunion falls on the October UTA weekend and is open to all current and former members of the wing and their families, including those who served in the following AF Reserve units at Hill AFB:

• 313th Fighter Bomber Squadron

• 313th Troop Carrier Squadron

• 733rd Troop Carrier Squadron

• 945th Troop Carrier Group

• 945th Military Airlift Group

• 508th Tactical Fighter Group

• 419th Tactical Fighter Wing

• 419th Fighter Wing

Invitations will be sent to key 419th FW alumni in April, and an e-invitation will be available soon on the wing’s website

AFSA holds monthly meetings on base

Air Force Sergeants Association, or AFSA, general membership meetings are held the last Wednesday of each month at 3 p.m. in The Landing. 

Members are encouraged to bring a nonmember with them.
