Recruiters, EOD tout possibilities of Reserve service

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah — Air Force Reserve recruiters teamed up with Hill’s explosive ordnance disposal team Dec. 12 for a military style “show and tell” at Clearfield High School.

Students in the Junior ROTC class heard from Airmen in the 419th and 775th EOD, who brought a bomb suit to demonstrate how personnel must equip themselves to deal with explosives.

“I’m always looking for different opportunities to show up in the community to represent the Air Force Reserve,” said Tech. Sgt. Andrew Mistkowski, Hill’s newest Reserve recruiter. “My goal is to bring awareness, because a lot of people don’t know there’s a Reserve function of the Air Force.”

The Reserve offers an opportunity to serve part time in the military – one weekend a month and two weeks per year at minimum. The 419th Fighter Wing at Hill AFB is Utah’s only Air Force Reserve unit.

Mistkowski, who himself has served in the Reserve since 2010, said he visits schools to show young people what opportunities are available on base. It also gives students a chance to meet the Airmen who are working those jobs.

“The Reserve is an avenue for people to be in the military but still live in the community where they grew up,” he said. “You can still go to school, work full time, and do anything else you want to do.”

Recruiters are currently looking to fill seven enlisted positions in the 419th EOD, Mistkowski said. EOD is charged with responding to situations involving potential explosives. They also support the U.S. Secret Service in protecting top elected officials and foreign dignitaries, and assist in MIA recovery efforts across the globe.

Mistkowski said EOD is just one of many opportunities to serve in the 419th FW. Many jobs relate to the F-35 Lightning II, which the wing has been flying and maintaining since 2015.

Reserve recruiters at Hill hope to recruit 224 people in 2019 to fill both part-time and full-time positions.
