History is full of stories of service members who have displayed exceptional heroism. From the Revolutionary War to the current conflicts, men and women have served with courage and honor, many of whom never returned home.

Veterans Day provides us the opportunity to reflect upon the tremendous dedication, and in many cases, the ultimate sacrifice of those who served our nation so courageously in the past. It gives us a chance to recognize the commitment and leadership of those serving in the military today.

Originally known as Armistice Day, the eleventh of November commemorates the end of World War I, ceremoniously declared on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill officially establishing November 11 as Veterans Day. In his words, this federal holiday will “let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom.”

This day, we honor veterans of all wars, past and present. Let us take the time to recognize and show gratitude to all who have answered our nation’s call. Let us celebrate their patriotism, love of country, and passion for selfless service. Let us reflect on the significance that their sacrifices have had to safeguarding our way of life. And, last of all, in whatever role we play, let us dedicate ourselves to protecting the freedoms we enjoy to build upon the efforts of all who have served.
