Base Tax Center needs volunteers

Base Tax Center needs volunteers

The Legal Office is once again preparing for the opening of the Hill Air Force Base Tax Center.

The center, opening Jan. 25, will offer a variety of free tax services, including preparing tax returns for active-duty, dependents and military retirees.

Last tax season, volunteers prepared nearly 3,000 federal and state tax returns, saving clients nearly $500,000 in preparation and filing fees.

The program is run entirely by volunteers — and the more volunteers available, the more returns that can be prepared.

Volunteers get Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, training in early January and should thereafter plan to spend at least 40 hours volunteering in the tax center during its period of operation of Jan. 25 through April 15.

Volunteers can be military, dependents, military retirees or DOD civilian employees.  Without continued support from volunteers, this important service cannot survive.
