Southwest Gate closes Aug. 11

Hill’s Southwest Gate will close permanently Aug. 11 with the end of Utah Department of Transportation’s major construction at the base’s South Gate and on Highway 193 in Layton.

The Southwest Gate is being closed to:

• Enhance installation security

• Improve pedestrian safety for children walking to and from school from the housing area on the base

• Maximize security forces manpower and resources

The permanent gate closure was originally scheduled for July, but was delayed as UDOT’s construction at the South Gate and Highway 193 continued longer than was planned. The South Gate (open 24/7), Roy Gate (open 24/7) and West Gate (open 4 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday-Friday) will all remain open.

The closure of the Southwest Gate, already operating under limited hours, will have no impact on the hours at the pedestrian school gate located near the Southwest Gate.

East Canyon hosts Military Day Aug. 15

East Canyon State Park will host a Military Appreciation Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Activities will include a free barbecue, canoeing/kayaking and free fishing for kids under 12. Adults will need a license. 

The event is open to service members, military retirees and their immediate family members.

Hispanic American scholarships offered

The Hispanic American Heritage Observance Committee is offering $500 scholarships to current Hill AFB civilian/military personnel and their immediate family members. 

Applications can be picked up at the Equal Opportunity Office at Building 1294 or by contacting Carlos Romero Jr. at carlos.romero.1@us.af.mil or www.facebook.com/hillairforcebasehahmc. Applications must be submitted no later than Aug. 17. 

Scholarships will be presented at the Hispanic Observance Luncheon at the base’s Hubbard Memorial Golf Course on Oct. 8.

‘Hero2Hired’ job fair coming Aug. 19

A Hero2Hired job fair will take place Aug. 19 at Provo’s Utah Valley Conference Center, 220 West Center St. 

This free event offers employment opportunities to reservists, guardsmen, veterans and spouses. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features more than 50 employers who recognize the unique skills military members bring to the workplace. 

Additionally, a job fair preparation workshop will be held at the Utah National Guard Headquarters in Draper Aug. 12.

Military Appreciation Pool Party coming up

A military appreciation pool party will be held from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Roy Aquatic Center located at 2977 W. 5200 South in Roy. Military members and their immediate families are invited for free swimming, food, homemade desserts and drinks. A number of door prizes donated by local businesses will also be available. A valid military-issued ID is required for entrance.

The event is sponsored by Roy Christian Church and is held annually to show appreciation for the sacrifices made by military members and their families.

Chief’s golf tourney sign-ups underway

Sign-up is under way for the 18th Annual Hill Chiefs’ Group Golf Tournament planned Aug. 21 at the Hubbard Golf Course.

Proceeds from the tourney go to support various Hill organizations and events, including Operation Warm Heart, the Airman Leadership School and various quarterly and annual award recognition programs.

Cost for the tourney is $60 per person; Hubbard Golf Course punch will be accepted (two punches, plus $40). Entry fee includes greens fee, golf cart, lunch and prizes. Format for the event is four-person select shot (scramble).

Travis Brass plays for free in Ogden

The U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West, presents a free concert in Ogden by the Travis Brass. This family-friendly event will take place at the Ogden Amphitheater, 342 25th Street, at 6 p.m. Aug 30. This concert is open to the public.

Travis Brass is part of the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West from Travis Air Force Base, California. Withf two trumpets, French horn, trombone and tuba, the ensemble supports a wide variety of musical events ranging from military ceremonies and patriotic shows to educational programs and recitals of original works for brass quintet. 

Members are professional, active-duty Air Force musicians working in support of Air Force and Air Mobility Command official military recruiting and community relations objectives. The only active-duty Air Force band west of the Rockies, the Band of the Golden West is comprised of 60 talented and versatile Airmen/musicians under the command of Captain Dustin M. Doyle.

 In addition to performing for civilian communities throughout the states of California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah, the band supports 13 Air Force Bases, 8 Air Force Reserve Wings, and 6 recruiting squadrons in over 250 annual performances for 1.5 million listeners. 

Commander’s Cup slated for Sept. 8

A golf tournament to support the Hill Aerospace Museum will be held Sept. 8 at the base’s Hubbard Memorial Golf Course. 

Cost is $150 per golfer, which includes entry fee, cart, food and prizes. Check-in begins at 10:30 a.m. and is followed by an 11:15 a.m. golf clinic. The tournament begins at noon and culminates with an award dinner at the golf course club house.

The Western-themed event includes a silent and live auction, which raises thousands of dollars for Hill AFB Airmen and families.

Diversity Council offers prize for logo

The Team Hill Diversity Council is seeking your help. All councils, including Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Holocaust Remembrance Day, Pacific Islander Month, Pride Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, National American Indian Heritage Month, and National Disability Employment Awareness Month, have unified to form one Diversity Council, and are seeking a logo to represent the council. 

Submit a logo design from July 1-Aug. 14. Voting will occur during the Team Hill Diversity Council general meeting scheduled for Aug. 20. Council executive officers may not submit a design. 

The logo must be 2-by-3 inches in size and submitted in a PNG or JPEG format. The winner will receive $100, as well as the pride of having the logo displayed on coins, shirts and banners. Lost/stolen IDs must be reported

There are new procedures in place for reporting lost or stolen Common Access Cards at Hill Air Force Base.

The cards, used by Team Hill members to enter the base and access computer networks, are controlled documents that contain personal information.

As soon as the discovery is made that a card has been lost or stolen, members must report the issue to the 75th Security Forces Squadron Pass and Identification Office or Emergency Communications Center at 801-777-3056. 

They must then visit the 75th Security Forces Squadron in Building 408 and fill out an Air Force Form 1168, explaining the circumstances surrounding the lost or stolen card. 

The Form 1168 is required before users can have a new card issued by customer service at the Force Support Squadron in Building 430. Two forms of current federal ID are also required to have a new card issued (passport, driver’s license, social security card, etc.).
