Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Gail Halvorsen, a C-52 Skymaster aircraft pilot known as the ‘Candy Bomber,’ talks to 2nd-6th graders at Hill Field Elementary School, Clearfield, Utah, Feb. 2. Halvorsen, who resides in Utah, was a pilot during the Berlin Airlift in 1948 and 1949. Then-Lt. Halvorsen boosted the morale of those living in besieged West Berlin by attaching handkerchief parachutes to chocolate bars and dropping them to the children on the ground below. At Hill Field Elementary School, he reminisced about his military service and encouraged the students to set goals, be lifelong learners, and realize their special talents and abilities.
