DAU opens new classrooms at Hill

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah — To meet an increasing student demand, the Defense Acquisition University has opened a new facility in Falcon Hill National Aerospace Research Park, part of an ongoing Enhanced Use Lease program located on the base’s west side.

The new facility on the second floor of building 1581 has four classrooms, nearly doubling student capacity to 126. There are also eight breakout rooms for team projects, and two of the classrooms have video teleconferencing capability, which allows for broadcasting training days, guest speakers and lecturers.

Kevin Carman, dean of DAU West, said DAU at Hill has gone from two faculty members and one staff member to seven faculty and two staff members. He said having the university strategically placed at Hill will provide more opportunities for base employees and will save the Air Force money by significantly reducing temporary duty costs for training.

“The growth has matched the demand we see here,” Carman said. “I’m excited that the opportunity to move to a better facility came about and look forward to serving students and workers more effectively.”

The DAU opened its first classrooms at Hill in 2012 and was housed in an older, 1200-series building. Col. Gabriel Lopez, 75th Mission Support Group commander, said the new facility will be a major benefit to the base, which employs more than 8,000 military and civilian workers in acquisition-related positions.

“I’m very excited about the capability DAU brings to the base and look forward to our continued partnership with the DAU and its students and faculty,” Lopez said.

The DAU is a corporate university of the Department of Defense offering acquisition, technology and logistics training to military, federal civilian staff and federal contractors.
