HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah – Capt. Sterling Broadhead, 67th Aerial Port Squadron, was part of an elite team of athletes who earned a silver medal during the 2018 Interallied Confederation of Reserve Officers Military Skills Competition in Quebec City, Canada, last week.
The event brought together reservists and guardsmen from all branches of the military across 13 countries. Participants are chosen based on rigorous standards in running, swimming, shooting, and orienteering.
“When you make the team and you’re representing the United States, that’s a fantastic feeling,” said Broadhead, who was chosen to compete for a third year straight. He said he trains year-round and tailors his workouts to prepare him for the pentathlon event.
Three-person teams compete in five events: marksmanship, a land obstacle course, a water obstacle course, land navigation, and hand grenade throwing. This year’s event included 40 teams in four categories: novice, advanced, veterans, and women’s.
Broadhead and his teammates, Army Lt. Col. Josh Barrow and Navy ROTC cadet Bryan Moon, placed second in the advanced category against first-place Germany.
“More than just competition, the whole intent is to build a good rapport with international partners,” Broadhead said. “Now that I’ve been involved for three years, it’s like a reunion when you see these friends from all over the world.”
