The 9th Annual George E. Wahlen Veterans Home 5K/10K Runs/1-mile walk and Chili Cook-Off will be held Saturday, October 8, 2016. Proceeds from the runs/walk and chili-cook-off will be donated to the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home in Ogden. To date, approximately $35,000 has been donated to the veterans home from this event. These funds allow the veterans home activities director to provide recreation services for the veterans, to include: trips to the Utah Natural History Museum, local restaurants, aquarium in Salt Lake City, attendance at movies and plays, fishing, and other activities. These activities do wonders for the morale of the veterans and give meaning and memories to their lives. Funding from Federal and State sources are not enough to offer these additional activities for residents of the veterans home. Without these additional funds, activities such as those mentioned would be significantly reduced.
Support for our military veterans will be greatly appreciated through participation in the runs/walk and the chili-cook-off. It is our way of giving back to those who have given so much for our country.
The runs/walk start at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home (1102 N. 1200 W., Ogden) clock tower at 10 AM, go through Business Depot Ogden (BDO), and end at the First United Methodist Church (1339 W. 400 N) in Marriott-Slaterville with the chili cook-off starting at 11 AM. After the runs and walk are completed, random prize drawings for all registered runners and walkers will be held throughout the activities. Awards will be presented to the top male and female runners for the 10K and the 5K, as well as for each age group male and female.
In addition, the Utah Military Academy will present a USO show during these activities. The American Red Cross will have a bloodmobile available. There is always a critical need for blood donations. For the younger children, a bounce house and play ground will be available, as well as an activities trailer from the United States Army. Lastly, if you look carefully, you just may see several storm troopers from Star Wars. As you can see, there is a lot planned for this event. So, bring the family and enjoy some chili and the planned activities.
The pre-registration deadline is 28 September. Check the following web sites for additional information: www.VeteransTributeRun.weebly.com or www.fumcogdenut.com. You may also call the First United Methodist Church at 801-393-5662.
