Hill’s Triple Ribbon Committee is hosting a series of substance abuse, breast cancer, and domestic violence prevention and awareness events during the month of October.
The committee, which is comprised of experts from Drug Demand Reduction, Health Promotions/HAWC, Civilian Health Promotions, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment and Family Advocacy, aims to bring awareness to these important issues.
The following prevention and awareness events are available:
Domestic Violence softball tournament
A Strike Out Domestic Violence softball tournament will be held at the softball fields near the Warrior Fitness Center at 8 a.m. Oct. 3. For more information, call 801-777-3497.
Drug prevention luncheon
On Oct. 6, the Triple Ribbon Committee will sponsor an addiction-recovery-themed luncheon with a panel of speakers who will discuss personal stories of addiction and recovery. Speakers will explain how recovery is not just for the person suffering from an addiction, but also for families.
The panel will consist of a peer counselor, a mother/father of an addict and a veteran who has gone through addiction and recovery and is now a peer counselor.
The menu for the luncheon is a deli club sandwich, pasta salad and seasonal fresh fruit for $11.19 for club members, $13.19 for nonclub members. Registration is required. For more information, call 801-775-5518.
Safety and self-defense class
The class will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 14 and 28 at the Warrior Fitness Center. Participants will learn to increase their increase situational awareness and learn to avoid getting into compromising situations. They will also learn simplified hand-to-hand technics using blocks, strikes and kicks if a situation arises.
The class is a participation class designed for any age group. All children must be accompanied by an adult who is willing to be interactive and participate. Participants should wear street clothing with no buttons, belts, jewelry or watches. For more information, call 801-777-1215
Breast Cancer Awareness Event
A“Get Your Pink On — Early Detection Awareness for Breast Cancer” event will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Warrior Fitness Center. This event will include chair massages given by students from local massage schools, yoga instruction on stress reduction exercises that can be done at a desk during work breaks, nail painting, and a free gift for the first 75 women who commit to either monthly self-examination and/or commit to having a mammogram in the next year.
