Outdoor adventures continue for Airmen thanks to partnership with Weber State

Hill Air Force Base’s Outdoor Recreation and Weber State Outdoor Program signed a memorandum of understanding on March 18 formalizing a partnership to facilitate adventure-based programs and events for Airmen and students.

In the spring of 2013, Hill AFB Outdoor Recreation, Tickets and Travel program lost its adventure-based program coordinator. This position was critical to facilitating outdoor adventures that help Airmen enjoy Utah while enhancing resiliency and morale.

Steven Penhorwood, Hill’s Outdoor Recreation director, saw the importance of providing this opportunity to our Airmen. He knew that Weber State had a similar program and reached out to Daniel Turner, Weber State Outdoor Program coordinator.

Over the next year, these two outdoor programs developed outdoor opportunities that included rafting on the Weber River, mountain biking in Moab and a backcountry skiing yurt trip.

The Air Force Community Partnership Initiative is a framework through which installation and community leaders can develop creative ways to leverage their capabilities and resources by finding shared value by building partnerships.

The partnership will ensure that Airmen receive the highest quality outdoor experience with the best trained and certified outdoor leaders in the area.
