Scholarships for E-1 to E-6

The Hill Top 3 is offering two $500 essay-based scholarships to active duty military in the grades of E-1 through E-6 and their spouses. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate program at an accredited college or university. Applications and essays must be received by Sept. 11. Spouses Round Up set for Oct. 2

The 388th Spouses Round Up annual fundraiser will be held at Club Hill on Oct. 2 starting at 6 p.m. The western-themed silent and live auction dinner event has been hosted at Hill Air Force Base the last eight years and it benefits on-base programs regarding quality of life issues for Airmen and Department of Defense civilians and their family members. All proceeds will be raised by a combination of corporate sponsorships, live auction/silent auction items, cash donations and ticket sales.

Tickets are $15 when purchased in advance and $17 at the door, and include a chuck wagon buffet. The event is open to all DoD ID cardholders. To request tickets, contact Rhiannon Lucero via e-mail at lucerorrj@aol.com or via telephone at (719) 201-7762 by Sept. 25.

Hill 'Givem-Hell' Combat Dining Out

Grab your Super Soaker, water ballons, guidons, face paint and get ready for the Team Hill "Givem-Hell" Combat Dining Out, Sept. 18 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the BORTA. Civilians are welcome and encouraged to attend. Uniform of the day will be ABU/BDU for military and hunting/outdoor wear for civilians. This event will celebrate the Air Force's 62nd anniversary. There will be a POW/MIA tribute and lots of groggin' — leaded and unleaded. Holy Smoke will be catering the meal, and there will be prizes given for best squadron centerpiece and best male/female camo paint job. Ticket prices are: Airman to senior Airman, $10; staff sergeant to technical sergeant, $15; master sergeant and above $20. Tickets may be purchased from your first sergeant.

Pavement projects to close two roads

The 75th Civil Engineer Squadron has two pavement construction projects, the first of which is on "D" Avenue (Balmer Street to Wardleigh Road) requiring the excavation and repair of an old drain at the intersection of Weiner Street and "D" Avenue. Work will continue on this project through Sept. 11 closing "D" Avenue (6th Street to Wardleigh Road). This will be a full road closure. Work will not include the intersections of "D" Avenue and 6th Street or Wardleigh Road. Recommended alternate route is Wardleigh Road or 6th Street to "E" Avenue or Southgate Avenue via 4th Street.

Another project on New Jersey Road and Warrior Way will require excavation and repair of asphalt. Starting sometime before or on Monday, Sept. 7, and continuing through Sept. 14, New Jersey Road and Warrior Way (2nd Street to Perimeter Road) will be closed. The project will not include the intersections of New Jersey Road and 2nd Street or Warrior Way and Perimeter Road. Recommended alternate route is Browning Street to Perimeter Street for through traffic (Quincy Lane is closed). Most buildings can be accessed from North Drive via Perimeter Street.

309th MXW's annual Dining Out Sept. 11

Maj. Gen. Robert H. McMahon will be the guest speaker when the 309th Maintenance Wing sponsors its fourth annual "Dining-Out" on Sept. 11.

The event begins at 5 p.m. in the Club Hill ballroom, and all 309th MXW employees and their guests are invited. The cost is $24 per person for club members and $26 per person for nonmembers. Dinner entree choices are baked salmon or beef medallions.

Reservations are due by Sept. 4, and made by calling the 309th MXW Protocol Office at 775-4731, or by e-mail to 309mxw.protocol@hill.af.mil. Dress for the event is mess dress for military, and semi-formal coat and tie for civilians.

McMahon is director of Logistics, Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Installations and Mission Support, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. He is responsible for organizing, training, and equipping more than 180,000 technicians and managers maintaining the Air Force global engagement aerospace weapons system inventory. He provides strategic direction for materiel and equipment management, fuels, vehicle management and operations, distribution, personal property and passenger traffic management.

The general previously served at Hill as aircraft director, and became the first commander of the 309th Maintenance Wing when it was formed from the Maintenance Directorate in February 2005.

Brig. Gen. John B. Cooper, 309th MXW commander, will be the event's presiding officer. Theme for the evening is "Remembering the Promise," taken from an address by Gen. Norton Schwartz, Air Force Chief of Staff.

Commander's Cup tournament Sept. 8

The tenth annual Commander's Cup is set for Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Hill Air Force Base's Hubbard Golf Course.

The one-day event tees off with a golf clinic led by John Kimbell, the 2007 South Georgia Classic Champion, and several other Nationwide Tour professionals.

"Anyone (with access to the base) is welcome to attend the clinic," said Tony Angelico, Hubbard Golf Course's general manager and head golf professional.

Immediately following the clinic is a golf tournament. Cost is $130 per golfer to play in the tournament, which covers greens fees, golf cart, food and prizes.

Each team will consist of one pro and four amateur players.

All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Hill Aerospace Museum's Aerospace Center for Continuing Education.

Angelico said twenty-eight teams will likely play in this year's tournament and the format is a modified Las Vegas scramble.

All players hit their respective tee shots, the best shot is selected and all players play their own ball from that point on. One gross and one net score is used for the team score.

This year's tournament is held in conjunction with the Nationwide's Tour Utah Championship held at Willow Creek Country Club in Sandy from Sept.10 through Sept. 13.

Piano lessons at Youth Center

Piano lessons are being offered through the Hill Air Force Base Youth Center with instructor Sandy Bryan who has taught piano for 31 years. She is a member of the Music Teacher's National Association and the Utah Music Teacher's Association. She is the Chairman for the Yamaha Clavinova Festival. he owns and operates a piano studio in West Haven and is excited to join the Youth Center staff to teach piano lessons at the HAFB Youth Center.

Class will include piano instruction, sight reading, ear training, composing, computer lab, theory, games, and a reward center.

Class time and ages: Classes will be formed according to age and piano experience for ages 5 years to 18 years old.

Classes will be Wednesdays or Fridays, 5:15 p.m.-6:15 p.m.; 6:15 p.m.-7:15 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. -8:15 p.m. at the Youth Center Building 883 in the Music Room.

Fee will be $45 a month for one-hour weekly lessons, four times a month. There is an additional charge for sheet music. For more information, call the instructor at (801)529-2523

The Ogden Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its sixth annual golf tournament at the Mount Ogden Golf Course on Sept.11. Support from the event helps to sponsor and assist funding several chamber programs which include helping inner city youth.
