Wheelchair basketball game set to celebrate National Disability Awareness Month

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah — The 11th annual Wheelin’ Wildcats vs. Team Hill wheelchair leadership basketball game at Hill Air Force Base is fast approaching.

The game will take place on Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. at the Warrior Fitness Center basketball court. This game puts base leaders in wheelchairs and pits them against semi-professional wheelchair basketball atheletes.

The Wildcats hold many exhibition games in the local community from churches to police departments and strive to inform people that it is not about a person’s disability, it is about their ability.

The game is to promote National Disability Awareness Month and is one of two special events on base during the month of October. National Disability Employment Awareness month is a time to recognize the significant contributions American workers with disabilities and dates back to 1945.

Units throughout the installation and families are encouraged to come out and cheer on their associated senior leadership.

A half-time show will consist of a young-persons basketball demo, then a young lady, Brianna Heim, discussing her new book “Brave Betty & Her Bestie’s,” as well as a magic show put on by the Chugg family.

A team-signed basketball will be awarded to the unit with the loudest cheering throughout the game.

Canned good donations will be accepted during the game and benefit the Airman’s Attic Food Pantry.

The event is free event and suitable for all ages.
