Hill museum hosts ‘Plane Talk’ speaker series

The Hill Aerospace Museum will host a “Plane Talk” speaker series Saturdays at 1 p.m. in the museum auditorium.

Each week, guest speakers feature topics related to the heritage of Hill AFB, the U.S. Air Force, other military branches, and many other subjects related aerospace and the defense industry. The speaker series is open to the public and admission is free.

Featured speakers in September:

Sept. 15 – Jim Green

Green graduated number one in his U.S. Navy Aviation Officer Candidate School class and served seven years as a naval officer. He flew the A4 Skyhawk during the Vietnam War era. He also managed intense military air traffic control operations and conflict resolution staging in Southeast Asia from Naval Air Station Cubi Point in Subic Bay, Philippines, right after the end of the war.

Green was a pilot for Continental/United Airlines for 26 years and helped take the company from “worst to first” through direct involvement in operations and management procedure improvements. He also was a volunteer United Nations lobbyist in New York, Geneva, The Hague, Lisbon, Riga, and Paris.

Green is currently is an adjunct associate professor in the School of Aviation Sciences at Utah Valley University and works with the American International Aviation Academy of Utah to bring Chinese students to the state for flight attendant and pilot training.

Sept. 22 – James Sullivan

Sullivan is a retired U.S. Air Force pilot. He joined the Air Force in January 1956 at the age of 18 and served a 29-year career. Sullivan holds the current world speed record from New York to London, which occurred Sept. 1, 1974, in an SR-71 Blackbird. In total, he logged 900 flying hours in the SR-71.

Sullivan’s early military flying experience was in fighter jets. He spent four years flying the F-100 and even longer in the F-105. During his first tour in Vietnam his F-105 was shot down in December 1965, but he was flying again in only three days.

He flew a second Vietnam tour in the F-4, and then a third tour in the SR-71.
