Hill introduces leadership course for flight commanders

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah — A newly-developed, three-day Flight Commander’s Course to educate and mentor up-and-coming leaders was held here March 6-9.

Developed locally by wing, group and squadron leadership, the first-ever session was attended by veteran flight commanders from across base who were charged with evaluating and providing feedback about the training curriculum.

The course was designed to educate new military and civilian equivalent flight commanders about the resources and information needed to perform their new duties.

Maj. Joshua Tate, 75th Force Support Squadron deputy director, said the course is an opportunity to develop officers across the installation. He said organizations on base provided input to develop the curriculum.

Throughout the course, attendees heard from several base agencies about the various services they offer and how they can assist them as leaders, as well as the people they manage.

The event included presentations from Airman Leadership School, military and civilian training, finance, mental health, first sergeants, legal, the Airman and Family Readiness Center, an emotional intelligence instructor, the Military Personnel Flight OPR/EPR and Awards Section, military and civilian personnel, the inspector general, the sexual assault prevention and response office, and manpower.

In addition, flight commanders collaborated with senior non-commissioned officers and senior commanders on several leadership-related topics.

“The curriculum of the course was good,” said Doug Pierson, 75th Medical Group Public Health flight commander. “I think it will benefit a lot of new flight commanders as they’re coming into their new roles.”

The course will be held twice a year with the next class scheduled for August.
