HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah — Base personnel recently participated in some friendly competition that resulted in measurable energy savings for the base.
Workers in seven buildings participated in an energy reduction contest last year from October to December to earn the coveted “Energy Champion Award” and all the bragging rights that come with it.
The contest was hosted by the 75th Civil Engineer Squadron Energy Management Team.
Building 39 came out on top reducing their electricity consumption by 16 percent during the two-month contest.
Coming in a strong second place, building 2013 finished with a 15 percent reduction and in third place, building 897 posted a 9 percent savings.
All the buildings that participated demonstrated measurable energy savings, proving that individuals can make a difference in energy reduction.
The contest encouraged personnel working in the buildings to practice energy efficient habits by being mindful of their surroundings, taking action, and turning off power consuming items sitting idle or not being used.
The goal was, “Not waste one watt.”
The challenge was educational, fun and contributed to the camaraderie with others. In addition, the mission was not disrupted by the challenge.
Congratulations to all the facility managers who participated in the contest and a special thanks to the ones who came out on top in this contest: Michael Barfuss, building 39, Tylor Christensen, building 2013, and Brandon Meyer, building 897.
Facility managers receive no additional compensation and it is often a thankless extra duty.
Throughout the year, the Energy Management Team encourages all personnel to do their part to reduce energy, water and fuel waste.
The installation has adopted the goal to reduce energy consumption per square foot by a total of 25 percent by fiscal year 2025, based on its 2015 fiscal year baseline.
Though it may not seem like individual contributions do much in terms of energy savings, when hundreds of people work together for a cause their efforts can be a real needle mover.
Energy efficient living is not a fad and will not be going away. It is now that we continue to work toward an energy efficient life.
Let’s celebrate the good choices and efforts people are making to achieve this goal and look forward to a brighter tomorrow.
