HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah — A professional bicycle race is scheduled to pass through the base with some impacts to access gates and roadways from approximately 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Aug. 4.

In Layton, stage 5 of the Tour of Utah will progress westward on State Route 193, where it will turn toward the base with access through the South Gate.

During this time period, the South Gate will be reduced to exit only and the Roy Gate will be closed. The West Gate will be open and operating under normal conditions and is the preferred gate to use during this time. After all race participants and support vehicles pass through the base, normal traffic will resume.

The race will follow the North-East Perimeter Road on Hill AFB, which includes Balmer Avenue, Foulois Road, Browning Road, and Wardleigh Road; the race will exit via the Roy Gate, near the Hill Aerospace Museum.

Motorists should be aware that local area traffic off the installation will also be impacted as the race transits through local communities surrounding Hill AFB. After exiting the base, the race will follow Freeway Park Drive to Ritter Road and travel southbound for seven miles where it will merge onto U.S. Highway 89.

Passing is NOT permitted along the road being used by the bicyclists or authorized race caravan vehicles. Traffic is allowed to follow behind the race, but only at the same speed as the race, which averages 22 to 28 mph. If you are traveling toward the race (in the opposite direction of the race), the Utah Highway Patrol will be controlling all traffic at certain intersections, treating this as a rolling road closure.

If you have access to the installation and would like to view the race, the best place to do that will be at the Hubbard Golf Course. You will need to arrive early as the road will be closed around 11 a.m. For people who do not have access to Hill AFB, the best place to view is at the Hill Aerospace Museum. If you plan to view from the museum, you will need to be there no later than 11 a.m. before the road is closed. Groups of spectators will not be permitted to gather around installation access gates.
