HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah — In preparation for Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response office held a Proclamation signing event with base-wide leaders March24.

The Proclamation details Hill AFB’s perspective on sexual assault crimes: It is a crime and it violates our core values. A sexual assault against Airmen, civilian employees, dependents or Department of Defense contractors is an attack on the Air Force.

As a sign of unity, mission partners came together to denounce inappropriate actions. The document was signed by Col. Jennifer Hammerstedt, 75 Air Base Wing commander, as well as leaders from other units and organizations including the Ogden Air Logistics Complex and Hill AFB Directorates

In keeping with this year’s DOD SAAPM theme, “Protecting our people, protects our mission,” the Proclamation demonstrates that supporting victims assists our Airmen and families in shaping “an environment that refuses to accept crimes against others.”

The end of the Proclamation expresses a responsibility for our military and community, stating that if we see events possibly leading to sexual assault, “we need to step in” and “support those who have already been hurt.” Finally, the document signs off, “Everyone must make this a priority, so every airman can FLY HIGH together.”

The intent of the event was to present a united front against sexual assault and promoting a supportive culture, which rejects interpersonal violence in our community. By starting with leaders, the base hopes to spread awareness for SAAPM and kick off the month of April through installation-wide support. The Proclamations will be placed throughout the base confirming the importance of a culture that protects our Airmen and our mission.
