Class to help military children transition

Registration is open for Supporting Military Children Through School Transitions training, taking place 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 3-4 at the Courtyard by Marriott, 1803 Woodland Park Drive, Layton.

The free training is intended for educators, school counselors and others who work with children of military families. The course, offered by the Military Child Education Coalition, provides information for professionals to help students, in kindergarten through high school, cope with the challenges of a mobile lifestyle.

Hero2Hired Job Fair set for March 24

SANDY — The Hero2Hired Job Fair, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 24 at the South Towne Expo Center, 9575 S. State Street, Sandy, is for veterans, active-duty military members, Guard and Reserve service members and military spouses. This event is free for both employers and job seekers. Free parking is also available.

Additionally, a Job Fair Preparation Workshop will be conducted at the Utah National Guard Headquarters, 12953 S. Minuteman Drive, Draper, on March 18. Call 801-432-4242 for workshop information.

FFWP accepting scholarship entries

The Friends of the Federal Women’s Program, or FFWP, is offering scholarships to all federally employed women on base and Pathway program students. 

The goal of the FFWP is to assist federally employed women in career advancements through education and self-improvement. The FFWP is in no way funded by the Federal Women’s Program or any government group, organization or entity. Scholarship application deadline is March 12.

The college student recipient of the $500 FFWP scholarship and the vocational/technical school recipient of the $200 will be expected to attend the March 24, Women’s History Month Luncheon at The Landing at 11 a.m.

Base tax center

The base tax center, located in the Poe Conference Center (Building 1295), is open through April 17. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. This is a free, walk-in service for active-duty, Reserve and Guard members (on Title 10 orders), military family members and military retirees.

Symposium explores ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’

SOUTH OGDEN — The Ogden Opera Guild will have a special treat at the local symposium leading up to the Salt Lake City performance of Mozart’s “Così Fan Tutte.”

Utah Opera’s artistic director Christopher McBeth will introduce singers from “Così Fan Tutte,” and principal coach and accompanist Carol Anderson will provide insight into the plot and background of the opera.

The symposium will be at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Social Center of Holy Family Catholic Church, 1050 E. 5600 South, South Ogden. Reservations are required; call 801-479-8977.

Guild members will provide European pastries, served as if from a Viennese coffeehouse. While sipping coffee, tea, hot chocolate or lemonade, guests will experience Austrian and German delicacies such as Linzer Torte, Sacher Torte (the signature torte from the Café Sacher in Vienna), Gugelhupf, Irschler cookies, Vanillekipferl, Nusstrudel and, of course, Apfelstrudel with schlag (whipped cream).

AF officials seek award nominees

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas — Air Force officials are accepting nominations for the 2015 Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs Grateful Nation Award. The award is presented annually to six service members who distinguish themselves through superior conduct in the war on terrorism.

Air Force enlisted nominees must be senior master sergeants or below, and officer nominees must be captains or below. Organizations and base-level personnel must contact their major command, field operating agency or direct reporting unit for applicable suspense dates and nomination procedures. Each MAJCOM, COCOM, FOA and DRU may nominate one person. 

Nomination packages are due to the Air Force Personnel Center by May 28.

Smoking cessation classes offered

Give Parents a Break

Give Parents a Break is a free child-care service offered to active duty families that have a family member deployed. The next session is Feb. 21, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A referral from the Airman and Family Readiness Center is required along with hourly-care documents. The Child Development Center cares for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years of age, and the Youth Center cares for children Kindergarten to 12 years of age.

If space is available, GPAB will accommodate individuals without a referral. The fee without a referral is $15 and completed hourly care documents. This program rotates monthly between daytime hours 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. and evening hours 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. 

AF wants enlisted nurse applicants

The Air Force seeks enlisted nurse commissioning program applicants. Eligible active-duty enlisted Airmen interested in a nursing commission have until Feb. 27 to apply. For more information, visit http://1.usa.gov/1qWw5JC. 

Gen. Henry H. Arnold Education Grant

Concerned about the soaring cost of higher education for your children? Maybe the Air Force Aid Society can help. The General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Program is an AFAS program that has $2,000 awards available for selected applicants. Applications are available now through March 13.

The program is open to dependent children of active-duty or retired military members, Title 10 AGR/Reservists on extended active duty, Title 32 AGR performing full-time active duty, retired reservists with 20-plus qualifying years of service, and of deceased Air Force members. Spouses of active-duty and Title 10 AGR/Reservists on extended active duty, as well as surviving spouses of deceased members, are also eligible candidates.
